Firstly we’d like to extend a huge congratulations to the BCD Group Premiers who overcame the odds to beat Coastal at Inglewood to become the 2018 Taranaki Club Champions. Unfortunately our other Club team in action on finals day, the Pepper Construction Colts, couldn’t get the job done against Spotswood and finished their first year season back in the competition for two years as runners-up to Spotswood United.
We would also like to thank all of our Sponsors for your support during the season which allowed us to achieve the results we have and look forward to your continued support next season being our 100th year and centenary celebrations. It was great to have some of our Sponsors at the Club last Thursday night prior to the final and also after the matches and would like to make special mention of Peter and Deb Melody of PAKn’SAVE, our main Club Sponsors and the Mark Newman Trust our junior Club sponsor. We encourage all Club members to support our valued Sponsors where possible.
Previous games between the BCD Group Premiers and Coastal in round robin games were shared one each with Coastal winning the last game of the 2nd round with a last minute penalty. The Premiers went into the match after finishing the round robin in 3rd spot on the ladder and advanced to the final following last weekend’s victory over the Chooks. Old Boys enjoyed good field position in the early part of the 1st half but found themselves 6-3 down with Coastal kicking 2 penalties to one by Daniel Waite. Old Boys had opportunities to score but resolute defence by Coastal kept them in the game. Old Boys took the lead late in the 1st half with a well worked try to Jahmarl Weir in the corner to lead 8-6 at the break. Coastal regained the lead in the 2nd half 9-8 with a 3rd penalty and had an opportunity to extend its lead minutes later but were denied after a costly mistake under Old Boys goalposts. Old Boys then took charge of the game with tries to Tupou Va’ai, Jayden Ford and an excellent 2nd try in the corner to Jahmarl Weir after a 50m serving run plus 2 conversions to Brayton Northcott-Hill and a final conversion to hooker Caleb Mawson. The final score line of 29-9 is a great result for the team and is a fitting reward for all of the hard work the team, management and coaches have put in throughout the year. The team would like to thank its sponsor Dave Hutchinson and the BCD Group and the other Club sides for all their support throughout the year.
Pepper Construction Colts went into its match against Spotswood United knowing that it would take a supreme effort to overcome the previously unbeaten Spotswood team. Old Boys had come close twice in previous games – a missed penalty in the last minute of the first game saw Spotswood win 27-25 while in the second game the teams were locked at 21-21 before Spotswood scored a last minute try to win 26-21. Old Boys were therefore confident if everything played out with the tactics they had in mind they had a decent chance of victory. Old Boys planning paid off early with a well taken try to Fletcher Broderick in the first few minutes which was converted by Cullen Murfitt. After scoring points Old Boys was unable to consolidate and gave away points too easily. While exits were an issue the team stayed in the fight with a couple of penalties but a lapse in defence saw Spotswood score just before the break to lead 24-13. Spotswood then started to dominate the game and scored a try through its large pack. Halfway through the second half Old Boys were able to score and convert to close the gap to 12 points but Spotswood finished with a converted try and 39-20 victory. Player of the day for Old Boys was Captain George Smith who was ably supported by his fellow loosies Reef Robinson and Jesse Goodwin. Cullen Murfitt kicked well with 2 penalties and 2 conversations and his line kicking gave Old Boys several try scoring positions which unfortunately they were unable to advantage of. The team would like to thank its sponsor Andrew Pepper and the Pepper Construction team, the Club and the other teams for their support throughout the year. The team is looking forward to going one better in 2019.
For the Junior Club Old Boys will be hosting the U8 North Taranaki tournament on Saturday 21st July. The U11 and U13 restricted teams played well enough to make the quarter finals, but unfortunately results didn’t go their way, effectively ending the season. The Old Boys U13 Open Weight team have made it through to the semi-finals after some excellent rugby in the later part of the second round. With the opportunity to play the final as a curtain-raiser to the Ranfurly Shield game on Saturday 28th July, the boys have everything to play for against Tukapa at 12.00pm on Saturday 21st July. Best of luck! The key sponsors for the Junior Club is the Mark Newman Memorial Trust who do a fantastic job providing funding for all of the Junior Club teams. Junior Prizegiving will be on Sunday 29th July in the afternoon with more details to come.
The Club enjoyed an excellent night at the White House after the finals with entertainment provided by Off-the-Cuff. It was great to have the support of the all the teams and Sponsors proving the Club is in good shape. We look forward to an exciting 2019.

Finally as this is our last update for the season we’d like to say a huge thank you to the Phil, Abe, Ross and Tommo for your inputs to these updates and all of our Sponsors in particular our major sponsor PAK’nSAVE. It’s been great to have your support and to catch up with you throughout the season. Without your support we would not be able to function as a Club and we trust you have enjoyed the experience.
