On Saturday 14 April the Premiers, Division 1 and Division 2 sides took on their Southern counterparts at the TSB Hub in Hawera.
The BCD Group Premiers continued its form from the previous match against Coastal but had to withstand a late fightback by Southern in the final play of the game. Once again Old Boys got away to a great start into a strong head wind to lead 15-0 after 25 minutes with some great interplay by the backs and forwards. Southern enjoyed good periods of the game and fought back to trail 15-13 at half time. In the second half both teams had periods of ascendancy with Old Boys managing to keep the score board ticking over and with minutes to go held a 27-20 lead. Southern continued to hammer away at Old Boys try-line and with Old Boys down to 13 with two players in the sin-bin, Southern scored in the final play of the match to bring the score line to 27-25. Had Southern converted the from a handy position they would have salvaged an unlikely draw. As it was the conversion went wide and Old Boys held on for the deserved victory. Players to stand-out for Old Boys were Brayton Northcott-Hill, Hamish Alabaster and Brad Valentine.
The Alsco Senior Division 1 side battled hard in its match but was unable to stay with Southern, trailing 17-7 at half time and 42-17 at full time. The team was solid up front and dominated Southern for long periods during the game but got caught short out wide with good attack from their opposition exposing gaps in its defence. The team is competing well in most facets of the game and with some better structure on defence will be successful in the coming games. Players to stand-out for Old Boys were Sean McKerrow, Gary Hofmans and Richard Darney.
The Sterile Services Division 2 team put in a solid first 40 minutes playing with determination and hard toil to lead its match 12-10 at half time. After taking the field with 14 players due to players having work commitments Old Boys found itself down to 13 men after losing David Hutchinson to a ‘blue’ card after 15mins. Reinforcements arrived at halftime to bolster the ranks but as the half progressed Old Boys battled away but couldn’t match the Southern side who finishing strongly to run out winners 46-19. Old Boys player of the day was Andrew Gadsby with good support by Johnny Walker, Stu Cade and Mike Carruthers.
The Pepper Construction Colts had another good win 19-10 against Southern and are now three wins from three games which is a great start to the season. It wasn’t the team’s best performance but as they say a win is a win. Good defence on the line ensured Old Boys turned with a narrow lead at half time. The second half saw Southern score first but the team got going and launched some good attack only to have two try’s disallowed with forward passes. A good try in the later stages of the game by Fletcher Broderick sealed the game. Old Boys player of the day was Reef Robinson.
