Round 1, Week 7

  Friday, May 18 2018

The final game of the 1st round of the competition involved the Premiers, Division 2 and Colts sides playing Inglewood while the Division 1 side had the bye.

BCD Group Premiers won a hard fought battle with Inglewood 31-10 in challenging conditions on Friday night under lights. Old Boys scored 3 tries in the first half, 2 to Kaylum Boshier and 1 to Shaan Waite to lead 17-3 at half time. Inglewood lost a player to a red card in the 1st half but found another gear early the 2nd half to pressure Old Boys to score a try to reduce Old Boy’s lead to 17-10. Old Boys was however able to withstand Inglewood’s attack and scored another try in the corner to Jackson Carrington plus 2 penalties to Daniel Waite. Players to stand out for Old Boys and to pick up MVP points were Jackson Carrington (3), Kaylum Boshier (2) and Shaan Waite and (1). At the end of Round 1 the Premiers sit 2nd on the competition table, 1 point behind leader Southern.

Alsco Division 1 team had the bye. Old boys sits 3rd on the competition ladder.

Sterile Service Division 2 team was scheduled to play on Saturday 12 May but unfortunately had to default its game as it was short on numbers due to unavailability and injuries.

Pepper Construction Colts came away with a very good 38-0 win in difficult conditions also on Friday night 11th May. A lot of effort went into training during the week on tackling technique and the team certainly took the battle to Inglewood with a number of players making big improvements and a number of players hitting really hard in defence. Having 3 Premier players in Blake Patterson, Jesse Goodwin and Brodie Lilley available made a big difference and they set the standard and a lot of their teammates lifted up a gear by having them leading the way. In total Old Boys scored 6 tries with 3 to Humble Ritson. There were many telling runs from the back by Fletcher Broderick and the player of the day was Cory Jury. A couple of players Cory Rigden and Jesse Goodwin ended up in hospital with injuries, Cory suffered a broken collarbone and Jesse a suspected broken wrist however X-rays cleared him. This week we will be looking a big week of training in preparation for Tukapa on Saturday. The Colts team sits 2nd on the competition table.

The Junior Club continues with its competition and draws are available on the website www.trfu.co.nz.
